Kent State Massacre :: essays research papers

The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions      The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions were wrote covertly by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison because of the harsh Alien and Sedition Acts went in 1798. In the assessment of Jefferson and Madison, the Acts were out of line. They additionally spoke to a significant triumph for the Federalists. By composing the Resolutions, Jefferson and Madison initiated the fights of those against the Alien and Sedition Acts and those on the side of more grounded states’ rights. In spite of the fact that the Resolutions were effective in the two beginning states, they didn't have a lot of accomplishment in different states. All things considered, the new thoughts introduced in the Resolutions were practically progressive. Despite the fact that the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 and 1799 were not effective, they were significant in light of the fact that they gave important contentions to the supporters of more noteworthy states’ rights against the defenders o f a more grounded focal government.      The Alien and Sedition Acts assumed significant jobs in the coming to fruition of the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions. Gone in mid 1798, the Acts set out various cruel limitations on outsiders. The Alien Act extended the base a very long time for qualification for naturalization from five years to fourteen years. It additionally enabled the President to remove any outsider from the nation. The Sedition Act was significantly harsher; it gave the legislature the option to capture anybody blamed for dissident exercises. The Sedition Act along these lines took action against numerous Jeffersonian papers which condemned the legislature. Obviously, Jefferson censured these Acts; he even called them â€Å"worthy of the eighth and ninth century† (2/p.174). With these laws the Federalists were believed to be smothering the intensity of the Jeffersonians.      Through the Alien and Sedition Acts, those on the side of a more grounded central government accomplished a significant triumph. The Acts gave new powers which were not directed in the Constitution to both the official and administrative branches. The Federalists had the option to pass these demonstrations with their rationale dependent on free interpretations of the Constitution, particularly the â€Å"elastic clause.† In peacetime, these Acts would not have gotten an opportunity in being passed, however the undeclared war with France had disturbed up Congress enough to acknowledge these free interpretations.      The rivals of the Alien and Sedition Acts were driven by Jefferson and Madison; in light of the Acts the Republicans propelled an assault on what they accepted were breaks of the Constitution. The assault on the Alien and Sedition Acts depended on the â€Å"strict development theory† of the Republicans.

The Family Is The Nucleus Of Civilization Essay - 1625 Words

One of the most important social institutions that has survived the test of time is the family. Will and Ariel Durant quoted that â€Å"the family is the nucleus of civilization†. Family is a unit of two or more persons united by marriage, blood, adoption or consensual union, in general consulting a single household, interacting and communicating with each other (Desai, 1994). A family is an important unit of society because of its power to influence the individual, household and community behaviour (Sriram, 1993). In India, family is a prized recognition and is an important determinant of one’s identity. This is primarily because one’s socio-demographic elements have also been thought to reflect one’s standing in the society. Also, India is a collectivistic culture and emphasizes the importance of the idea of a collectivistic form of living where family integrity, family loyalty, and family unity is highly valued. Industrialization is often considered by the world economies as the vehicles of change in a modern world. More and more countries are becoming industrialized in the expectation of better development and growth. India too is following the same lead. The phenomenon of urbanization has been growing steadily in India and currently 31% of India’s population are inhibited in urban areas in 2011 as compared to 27.81% in 2001 (GOI, Census of India, 2011). The arrival of industrialization and subsequent urbanization has led to migration to urban areas, the growth of slums, andShow MoreRelatedComplex Civilizations Essay778 Words   |  4 PagesSydney Dodds Origins of Ancient Civilizations Professor Hepp February 6, 2013 Drawbacks of Complex Societies Today we are convinced that modern, complex societies excel and surpass earlier civilizations. The Rules of the Fashion Industry Free Essays

Introduction The rules of the fashion industry have changed. Fashion is no longer the diktats of seasonal fashion houses. Fashion today is ever evolving, ever changing. We will write a custom essay sample on The Rules of the Fashion Industry or any similar topic only for you Order Now What’s hot today is not tomorrow. The definition of haute couture (high fashion) and pret-a-porter (ready to wear) no longer bear the exclusive association of highly-priced designer garments or expensive boutiques available to the cream of society. The average person be it a teen , college student, guy or girl next door, mums and dads with toddlers, or people in their 40s and 50s ageing like fine wine, just about everyone wants to be trendy, fashionable, well dressed and smart. Affordable, fast-changing fashion is driven by customer needs and demands and not supply. Making affordable, fast-changing styles of fashionable clothes to the consumer is the key success driver of the fashion retailers. Consequently, the choice of a supply chain management (SCM) model and the supply chain practices adopted by fashion companies are also keeping the customer at the helm. Traditional Supply Chain Issues in Fashion Apparel Industry As I begin to research the best possible SCM model for the fast-fashion retail company I’ve been hired for, I first seek to understand the limiting factors in the traditional supply chain management in apparel industry. My analysis of the broad issues are as follows: 1. Changing Customer Tastes Unmet Due to Long Lead Time In any retail operation, particularly of fashion garments, there is variability in consumer demand due to changing tastes. For example tunic tops last quarter, jeggings this quarter and so on. Changing consumer tastes and long lead time from design to production render ordering of fashion garments risky. The long lead time also hinders offering variety to consumers in terms of styles and range. As consumer tastes become more diverse and fast changing, increasing the fashion range and decreasing the garment lifecycle, whilst managing inventory becomes exponentially challenging. 2. Unpredictability in Demand Resulting in Inventory Costs The problem of selling fashion garments due to demand uncertainty has grown enormously for fashion retail houses. Adding to this problem is the level of SKUs (stock keeping units), which raises the level of uncertainty if a particular range of fashion garment will sell or not in a given season. This means the retailer carrying a range of fashion garments that don’t sell or overstock and also that sells beyond expectations resulting in running out of stock. Delays in replenishment for not having an inventory of fashion garments in high demand will result in stock-out costs. Therefore, inventory is not always undesirable. Three types of costs are typically incurred in inventory: Enforced markdown of unsold overstocked garments Loss of sales due to stock outs of high-demand clothes Warehousing costs The level of inventory will depend on forecasted demand, frequency of orders, lead time and cost to receive replenishment. 3. Inflexible Supply Chain Hindering Control Supply chain includes different requirements and roles from its participants. The typical participants include Supplier, Manufacturer, Distributor, Retail Merchant and Consumer. The fashion manufacturer’s success hinges on their ability to maintain relationships between each of the entities in the supply chain. In a way, the participants of the supply chain foster dependency and a slight slip at the supplier end has the capacity to bring operations in the supply chain to a grinding halt. This dependency of the manufacturer on various entities of the supply chain necessitates weighing the option of make v/s buy. The strategy involves decision on activities that can be performed in-house versus those that can be outsourced. Control, quality and speed of the activities within the supply chain are key determinants in choosing make or buy, produce in-house or outsource. 4. Ineffective Information Flow Impacting Operational Efficiency The IT infrastructure or lack thereof has a direct impact on the information flow between entities, which in turn impacts the operational efficiency of the supply chain. A bullwhip effect at the downstream has a significant impact on forecasting, production and inventory at the upstream. Even if apparel companies install IT systems, it is challenging for companies to obtain sales data that do not own their sales channels. It becomes difficult to refine manufacturing according to sales data. Countering Traditional Supply Chain Issues – The Fast Fashion Supply Chain Practices Some of the key words that have stood out from my analysis of the traditional supply chain are changing customer tastes leading to uncertain demand, long lead time, inventory costs, ineffective information flow, IT infrastructure, make or buy strategies. How did some of the high-velocity fashion retail houses conquer these challengesAn analysis of the supply chain practices at two such fast fashion retail companies Zara and HM provide key insights. 1. Quick Response to Shifting Consumer Tastes and Demands The retail clerks and store managers at Zara determine the new styles to manufacture by feeding sales data back to the manufacturers. Store managers and staff relay customer feedback to regional managers on styles, fabric, cut and colours. While most fashion houses create designs for the public, it is the public that creates Zara’s designs.HM‘s design team too bring to the stores clothes that customers are demanding. HM adopts a customer-driven approach to production. By making use of traditional research methods as well as street trends, HM’s central staff and national offices channelise a lot of their effort into research and prediction of emerging trends. The new high velocity retailers require frequent shipment in small batches as an ongoing replenishment determined by ongoing sales data as well as customer preferences at sales outlets in contrast to traditional apparel supply chain model where manufacturers made typical bulk shipment per season. Both HM and Zara long renounced the traditional industry practice of spring/summer and autumn/winter collections. Their seasonless cycle involves bringing new clothes on a rolling basis throughout the year, which enables designers to receive customers’ reactions to their new line and incorporate them into more new lines rapidly. Zara has the fastest lead time with a catwalk to rack time of just 15 days. 2. Increased Flexibility of Supply Chain Through Vertical Integration The success of Zara’s fast production is in its vertically integrated supply chain model providing total control of its process from design to sale. Zara owns most of its manufacturing capability and is thus able to maintain flexibility of the manufacturing process enabling it to respond to rapidly changing consumer tastes. About 50% of Zara’s clothes are manufactured in its state-of- the art factories. Zara uses a hybrid manufacturing approach with high demand trendy, highly perishable clothes being produced in its factories in small batches, whereas low demand variability items such as T-shirts and jeans are produced by contract manufacturers. HM does not have factories but relies on a network of 750 external suppliers with flexible lead times and low production costs. HM also pioneered vertical integration with the distribution network. This vertical marketing enables HM to directly gain and exploit information about sales and customers and accelerate its response to the market. Vertical integration enables cost savings due to reduced tiers in supply chain. 3. Better Inventory Management Through Controlled Production At Zara, if a particular range or style of clothes sells out, it simply makes more of them. If it doesn’t, then it stops production. This approach coupled with Zara’s bi-weekly shipment to retail stores minimises overstock and inventory enabling Zara’s clothes to be sold at full retail price with high profit margins. Zara limits each design to 3 sizes and 3 colours. Zara is efficiently able to move inventory owing to its up-to-the-minute design, just-in time production and delivery. HM, which relies on its suppliers aims to find the optimal time and supplier to order each item of clothing. On an average, HM is able to get supplementary orders in a few weeks for clothes that are selling well. At HM, the stock management is primarily handled internally. The store stockroom within HM called the ‘Call-Off warehouse’ replenishes stores with clothes that are in high demand on item level. 4. Use of Efficient IT Infrastructure for Rapid Information Dissemination High-velocity operation depends on rapid information flow to a large extent. All of Zara’s stores are linked to its headquarters electronically. The entire supply-chain operation at Zara from design to retail is digitally controlled. Information flow binds the entire pieces of Zara’s operation together. Information is shared openly across business units that are highly adaptable with decision making capacity. IT is a crucial component of HM’s value chain. IT integrates HM stores with the logistics, procurement departments and the central warehouse. An intelligent procurement system processes sales data gathered from central departments. Communication on design and new product development occurs electronically between departments. Limitation of Fast Fashion Supply Chain Practices Clearly, some of the supply chain practices of Zara and HM have been a break-through in the traditional supply chain apparel industry. While the advantages of their practices are undisputable, it is important to be aware of some of their limitations. 1. Vertical Integration v/s Economies of Scale While vertical integration has several advantages, it is important to note some of the limitations. As seen from Zara’s vertical integration model from design to sale and HM’s vertical integration in distribution, flexibility and control are the key drivers. However, vertical integration doesn’t enable acquiring economies of scale. Low lead times of Zara and HM does not give them the cost advantage of high volume discount manufacturing or buying. 2. Centralised Distribution Centres v/s Global Expansion Both Zara and HM are quickly able to replenish garments in their numerous retail stores across Europe. Although both Zara and HM have scaled up their distribution systems, the centralised logistics will be subject to diseconomies of scale as newer stores are opened in new markets and continents. Shipping garments from their single distribution centre may work well within Europe. However, short lead times and low operational costs may be impacted as they branch out in new territories. 3. Vertical Integration in New Markets v/s High Labour and Production Costs To have state- of- the art factories and replicate the manufacturing, distribution process in new countries may be challenging. Potential economic and regulatory variables such as minimum wages or unions may render manufacturing in new countries impractical. The Best Fit Supply Chain Practices for a Fast Fashion Retail Company Taking the best supply chain practices of fast fashion houses Zara and HM and at the same time covering the gap for some of their identified limitations forms the basis of my recommendation. 1. Seamless Integration of Design Cycles with Inventory Control Integrate design cycles seamlessly inventory control and thereby control short term expenses with long term performance goals. Customers can be compelled to revisit stores for new designs and catering to their varied tastes through rapid response through effective inventory management 2. Make Them And Buy Some The advantages of vertical integration are far too many. But vertical integration as seen is not without limitations. The costs associated with rapid manufacturing maybe suitable for fast forward apparel. However, for clothes with low demand variability, a long lead time with materials and manufacturing costs savings may be more efficient. Low variability garments also enable acquiring economies of scale with bulk manufacturing or buying. 3. Negotiate Shipping Contracts for Overseas Expansion E-Retailing Thinking ahead, as part of overseas expansion and e-retailing strategy, setting up manufacturing and distribution centres overseas can involve significant costs. It would be prudent to set up contracts with 3rd party logistic companies that enable negotiations of transportation costs based on volume and frequency by acquiring economies of scale 4. Use Efficient IT Systems for Seamless Information Flow Invest in Enterprise-wide IT systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) to integrate all entities of the supply chain. Use of other IT systems such as personal device applications (PDAs) by sales clerks to feed in real-time sales data and customer feedback linked to ERP systems will be a key success driver in dissemination of information which in-turn will positively aid in rapid production. Conclusion As a concluding note, emulating the success of fast fashion houses may or may not prove to be the most beneficial approach. Ultimately, the long term goal, positioning and vision of the fast fashion retail company holds the key to adopting the best fit supply chain strategy and practices. Politics and the English Language free essay sample

â€Å"Politics and the English language† George Orwell General questions 1. This piece is written basically just to criticize bad writing and also to criticize the downgrade of the English language. In the essay Orwell argues that â€Å"our language is probably curable†. The main point is just to show examples of how the language has deteriorated and also to give some pointers on how it can be fixed. 2. Throughout the essay the author’s tone is that of aggravation because the entire piece is basically a scolding speech to the way we use our language to express our feelings and meanings behind what we say. In the piece, the author uses a lot of Parenthesis just to add small thoughts or opinions into a particular sentence. A few examples would be, â€Å"It is easier- -once you have the habit- -etc in this sentence, â€Å"once you have the habit†, is added just to better the reader’s understanding of the point that Orwell is trying to get across. We will write a custom essay sample on Politics and the English Language or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Another scheme used is chiasmus, in the second paragraph this is shown by the sentence, â€Å"A man may take a drink a drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks†. In paragraph 10 both a rhetorical question and a parenthesis are used at the same time, â€Å"(what is a â€Å"rift,† for instance? )† this is both a side thought and a question to the audience to make them think. The thesis of the essay, I believe is stated in paragraph 2. The thesis is, â€Å"if one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly, and to think clearly is a necessary first step toward political regeneration†. I believe this is the thesis because basically the rest of the piece is based around ways to regenerate the language. . The language used to write this essay, in my opinion, is very descriptive and vivid. Some examples of the descriptive language used are personification, some puns and many similes. An example of a pun in this piece I also used and called a chiasmus, â€Å"a man may take a drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks†. Orwell says, â€Å"It is same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish†. Orwell compares the struggle against the abuse of language to that of, â€Å"like preferring candles to electric light†. Many similes are used in the piece just to show particular points and comparisons that Orwell wants to make the reader understand. Another trope that is used many times throughout is the personification an example within the piece is, â€Å"dying metaphors†. Words don’t literally die but by saying â€Å"dying†, Orwell better gets across the point that the metaphors he discussed are more and more disappearing from everyday use. Not dying, just not, being as frequently used. All of these examples are just a few of several used simply to reinforce the point of the essay. 4. Since the essay was written in London, in 1946 I believe that the audience for this piece was intended to be the English speaking general public. I believe that what Orwell is trying to convey to the public (in his eyes) is a sort of wake up call to the problem of the downgrade of their own language that is happening before there very eyes each and everyday. 5. I believe that the effect the piece had on the reader solely depends on the open mindedness of the actual reader. Some of the people who read this could have had the mindset of, â€Å"oh this is a bunch of bologna, and there is nothing wrong with the way i talk because I understand everything that is said around me†. And another reader might see it the way it was meant to be seen, which is, as an eye opener to the problem that was actually occurring. Again the effectiveness really just depends on who the reader is. . The author of this piece in my opinion did and also did not achieve his goal. It seems to be that his goal was to reach out to people and show the deterioration of the English language. He most likely succeeded in reaching out to some people, but I do not believe that Orwell achieved the most important goal in writing this essay. I think the most important goal was to show people how bad things were with the English language and permanently fix the problem. And comparing the English language of today to the English language of the early 1900’s should clearly show a complete change in the way we use our language and that is why I think that Orwell did not achieve the most important goal of the piece. 7. Overall I think the piece is well written and uses several schemes and tropes to accurately get the point across. The piece is a very one sided argument and a very strong and well supported one, which is why this essay is so well organized and easy for the reader to understand.

LinkedIns Top Skills The Best Hard Soft Skills (and Jobs!) for 2018

LinkedIns Top Skills The Best Hard Soft Skills (and Jobs!) for 2018 Want to know the top skills for the 2018 job market and whether youre a match? Look no further than LinkedIns top skills list for 2018. No brainer: Computer stuff tops the chart for the third straight year with Cloud and Distributed Computing and  Statistical Analysis and Data Mining, in the #1 and #2 hottest hard skills, respectively. If youre a computer nerd, youre in luck. I found out something interesting today while talking to a fellow career coach, Ramon Santillan, Jr. He specializes in helping people on the autism and Aspergers scales, who have high levels of intelligence, get jobs at big tech and engineering firms. The skills in demand in the market might match well to some of their capabilities. Whats new on the 2018 top skills list is that LinkedIn has expanded into soft skills. Topping that list are Leadership and Communication, which for good reason are the personal attributes most in demand by employers today. One of my favorite places to increase both of those skills is the Wright Foundation for the Realization of Human Potential. Let me know if you want information about their trainings in leadership and social and emotional intelligence. LinkedIns List of Top Skills for 2018 Soft Skills Leadership: You may have heard that youre always leading. Its just a matter of toward what. Companies are looking for leaders who support and motivate the people around them, delegate vs. micromanage, assert themselves appropriately, and take swift action, all in service of organizational goals. Communication: Good communication includes such important skills as good use of language both in speech and in writing, speaking up when something needs to be discussed, following direction, asking the appropriate level of questions, following proper communication procedures, and more. Collaboration: Working with a team and having good give and take makes you a valued employee. Time Management: Meeting deadlines, being realistic about workload, and being able to prioritize projects are all essential to being a great team member. And so is communicating when things dont go as expected. Hard Skills I have less to say about the hard skills. They are all technology based and of tremendous importance for companies today, for obvious reasons. Heres a breakdown of whats hot and whats a little less hot as we head into 2018. Cloud and Distributed Computing: This skill has been #1 since it made its debut on the top 20 list in 2016. Statistical Analysis and Data Mining: Bumped out of the #1 spot when Cloud and Distributed Computing showed up, this skill has been holding at #2 for three years straight. Middleware and Integration Software: Has remained in the top 5 since 2015. Web Architecture and Development Framework: Steadily rising, but down one from the #3 spot this year. User Interface Design: This skill started at #14 in 2015, moved up to #10 in 2016, and remains at #5 for 2017 and 2018. Software Revision Control System: Welcome to the top 10! Data Presentation: In the top 10 for the last two years, this skill is up one from #8 to #7. SEO/SEM Marketing: Maybe people are losing faith in SEO, or figuring out how to do it themselves. This skill has dropped from the #4 and #5 spots it held in previous years. Mobile Development: Here I was thinking companies still needed people to develop apps. But mobile development has dropped steadily for the last three years, from #6 to #7 to #9 could this be the last year for this skill? Network and Information Security: Similar to Mobile Development, this one has been flirting with the #6 and higher spot for 3 years, but dropped this year. I cant believe there wont be a continuing strong need for this skill. LinkedIns List of Best Jobs for 2018 Want to know what jobs some of these hard and soft skills will get you? Connective Tissue Types and Examples

Connective Tissue Types and Examples As the name implies, connective tissue serves a connecting function. It supports and binds other tissues in the body. Unlike epithelial tissue, which has cells that are closely packed together, connective tissue typically has cells scattered throughout an extracellular matrix of fibrous proteins and glycoproteins attached to a basement membrane. The primary elements of connective tissue include a ground substance, fibers, and cells. There are three main groups of connective tissues:Loose connective tissue holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to other underlying tissues.Dense connective tissue helps attach muscles to bones and link bones together at joints.Specialized connective tissue encompasses a number of different tissues with specialized cells and unique ground substances. Some are solid and strong, while others are fluid and flexible. Examples include adipose, cartilage, bone, blood, and lymph. The ground substance acts as a fluid matrix that suspends the cells and fibers within the particular connective tissue type. Connective tissue fibers and matrix are synthesized by specialized cells called fibroblasts. There are three main groups of connective tissues: loose connective tissue, dense connective tissue, and specialized connective tissue. Loose Connective Tissue This image of loose connective tissue shows collagenous fibers (red), elastic fibers (black), matrix, and fibroblasts (cells that produce the fibers). Ed Reschke/Photolibrary/Getty Images In vertebrates, the most common type of connective tissue is loose connective tissue. It holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to other underlying tissues. Loose connective tissue is named so because of the weave and type of its constituent fibers. These fibers form an irregular network with spaces between the fibers. The spaces are filled with ground substance. The three main types of loose connective fibers include collagenous, elastic, and reticular fibers. Collagenous fibers are made of collagen and consist of bundles of fibrils that are coils of collagen molecules. These fibers help to strengthen connective tissue.Elastic fibers  are made of the protein elastin and are stretchable.  They help to give connective tissue elasticity.Reticular fibers  join connective tissues to other tissues. Loose connective tissues provide support, flexibility, and strength required to support internal organs and structures such as blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves. Dense Connective Tissue This image of the dermis of the skin shows dense fibrous connective tissue. Irregular collagenous fibers (pink) and fibroblast nuclei (purple) can be seen. Ed Reschke/Photolibrary/Getty Images Another type of connective tissue is dense or fibrous connective tissue, which can be found in tendons and ligaments. These structures help attach muscles to bones and link bones together at joints. Dense connective tissue is composed of large amounts of closely packed collagenous fibers. In comparison to loose connective tissue, dense tissue has a higher proportion of collagenous fibers to ground substance. It is thicker and stronger than loose connective tissue and forms a protective capsule layer around organs such as the liver and kidneys. Dense connective tissue can be categorized into dense regular, dense irregular, and elastic connective tissues. Dense regular: Tendons and ligaments are examples of dense regular connective tissue.Dense irregular: Much of the dermis layer of the skin is composed of dense irregular connective tissue. The membrane capsule surrounding several organs is also dense irregular tissue.Elastic: These tissues enable stretching in structures such as arteries, vocal cords, the trachea, and bronchial tubes in the lungs. Specialized Connective Tissues This image shows a sample of fat tissue with fat cells (adipocytes, blue) surrounded by fine strands of supportive connective tissue. Adipose tissue forms an insulating layer under the skin, storing energy in the form of fat. Steve Gschmeissner/Science Photo Library/Getty Images Specialized connective tissues include a number of different tissues with specialized cells and unique ground substances. Some of these tissues are solid and strong, while others are fluid and flexible. Examples include adipose, cartilage, bone, blood, and lymph. Adipose Tissue Adipose tissue is a form of loose connective tissue that stores fat. Adipose lines organs and body cavities to protect organs and insulate the body against heat loss. Adipose tissue also produces endocrine hormones that influence activities such as blood clotting, insulin sensitivity, and fat storage. The primary cells of adipose are adipocytes. These cells store fat in the form of triglycerides. Adipocytes appear round and swollen when fat is being stored and shrink as fat is used. Most adipose tissue is described as white adipose which functions in the storage of energy. Both brown and beige adipose burn fat and produce heat. Cartilage This micrograph shows hyaline cartilage, a semi-rigid connective tissue from a human trachea (windpipe). Steve Gschmeissner/Science Photo Library/Getty Images Cartilage is a form of fibrous connective tissue that is composed of closely packed collagenous fibers in a rubbery gelatinous substance called chondrin. The skeletons of sharks and human embryos are composed of cartilage. Cartilage also provides flexible support for certain structures in adult humans including the nose, trachea, and ears. There are three different types of cartilage, each with different characteristics. Hyaline cartilage is the most common type and is found in areas such as the trachea, ribs, and nose. Hyaline cartilage is flexible, elastic, and surrounded by a dense membrane called perichondrium. Fibrocartilage is the strongest type of cartilage and composed of hyaline and dense collagen fibers. It is inflexible, tough, and located in areas such as between vertebrae, in some joints, and in heart valves. Fibrocartilage does not have perichondrium. Elastic cartilage contains elastic fibers and is the most flexible type of cartilage. It is found in locations such as the ear and larynx (voice box). Bone Tissue This micrograph shows cancellous (spongy) bone from a vertebra. Cancellous bone is characterized by a honeycomb arrangement, comprising a network of trabeculae (rod-shaped tissue). These structures provide support and strength to the bone. Susumu Nishinaga/Science Photo Library/Getty Images Bone is a type of mineralized connective tissue that contains collagen and calcium phosphate, a mineral crystal. Calcium phosphate gives bone its firmness. There are two types of bone tissue: spongy and compact. Spongy bone, also called cancellous bone, gets its name because of its spongy appearance. The large spaces, or vascular cavities, in this type of bone tissue contain blood vessels and bone marrow. Spongy bone is the first bone type formed during bone formation and is surrounded by compact bone. Compact bone, or cortical bone, is strong, dense, and forms the hard outer bone surface. Small canals within the tissue allow for the passage of blood vessels and nerves. Mature bone cells, or osteocytes, are found in compact bone. Blood and Lymph This is a micrograph of a group of red blood cells (erythrocytes) traveling through an arteriole (small branch of an artery). P.M. Motta S. Correr/Science Photo Library/Getty Images Interestingly enough, blood is considered to be a type of connective tissue. Like other connective tissue types, blood is derived from mesoderm, the middle germ layer of developing embryos. Blood also serves to connect other organ systems together by supplying them with nutrients and transporting signal molecules between cells. Plasma is the extracellular matrix of blood with red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets suspended in the plasma. Lymph is another type of fluid connective tissue. This clear fluid originates from blood plasma that exits blood vessels at capillary beds. A component of the lymphatic system, lymph contains immune system cells that protect the body against pathogens. Lymph is delivered back to blood circulation via lymphatic vessels. Animal Tissue Types In addition to connective tissue, other tissue types of the body include: Epithelial Tissue: This tissue type covers body surfaces and lines body cavities providing protection and allowing for the absorption and secretion of substances.Muscle Tissue: Excitable cells capable of contraction allow muscle tissue to generate body movement.Nervous Tissue: This primary tissue of the nervous system allows for communication between various organs and tissues. It is composed of neurons and glial cells. Sources Animal Tissues - Bone. Atlas of Plant and Animal Histology, mmegias.webs.uvigo.es/02-english/guiada_a_oseo.php. Animal Tissues - Cartilage. Look at the Picture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Look at the Picture - Essay Example Possibly he and his partner, camera person, have taken a trip into the wild and have finally come to a point where they feel they need to capture the moment of their achievement. Again this does not fully explains why the boy holds a stack of stones in the picture. Why is the boy holding a bunch of stones with such pride as if he is holding a trophy? It could be that he has reached a place of significance, and the stones are from its rubbles. It could be a historical building which they have discovered. But if that were the case why have the boy and his partner taken a photograph of the stones and not of the building itself? This possibility could not be so. Perhaps it is not an old building but rather an old tree against which the boy is standing. The multiple layers of roots in the picture indicate that the place where the boy is standing is under a tree root or a trough of dirt. Maybe the boy is proud to have discovered an ancient tree which is about to collapse, and he wants to c apture the moment of discovery. The stones are merely mementos of the place, and he is proud of having discovered this minor but significant

The Creator Who Started the Trend of Vampire Essay -- Literary Analysi

The Creator Who Started the Trend of Vampire Bram Stoker was the author of the world-wide famous novel, Dracula (1897). He was born on November 8, 1847 in Dublin, Ireland. His full name was Abraham, but was called Bram for short. Unlike today’s families, he grew up living with seven siblings. When he was young, he was an enfeebled child bedridden for his first 8 years. His father, Abraham Stoker (1799-1876), was a civil servant – someone who works for the government – and his mother was Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley (1818-1901). He married actress Florence Baleombe (1858-1937) in 1878. Stoker and Florence had one son named Irving Noel Thornley Stoker (1879-1961). (Merriman, 1) Even though Stoker was a sallow child, he eventually recovered and was able to attend Trinity College to study a variety of subjects. He studied mathematics, participated in sports, and was designated a spot on the school council as president of the Philosophical Society. He graduated with honors in 1870. (Merriman, 1) Due to his father’s occupation, Bram Stoker himself became a civil servant while reviewing dramatic theater. Stoker quit being a civil servant to pursue his career as a writer through the meeting of Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905), an actor for William Shakespeare’s plays and manager of the Lyceum Theater in London. With Sir Henry Irving, being one of Stoker’s reliable friends, he offered him the job of becoming co-manager of Lyceum Theater in London, where he continued to delve into the writing world. Meaning of Life and Thanksgiving Essay

As the first pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock and had a feast with the Indians, they shared a moment of thanks together. They gave thanks for all their blessings, thus, creating our lovely day of Thanksgiving. When Thanksgiving is thought of, the first thing that comes to mind is turkey and a plentiful amount of food. Thanksgiving to me, is the time to be together with the ones you care about. Coming together for a day to just be with each other and to catch up is what Thanksgiving means to me. Family should be with each other to share memories and to realize the plentiful amount of blessings they have been given. Thanksgiving is not only a day for gorging on food or falling into a food coma, but talking with each other and just being glad to be with one another. Having family during Thanksgiving is a crucial part in my life. Having all of my relatives in one place for one day to talk and have fun with them makes Thanksgiving extra special for me. It is one of the few days of the year that I get to see everybody. The turkey, yams, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes is just the icing on the cake. Everybody in my family loves the food. We eat and eat until we can’t eat anymore. My family has a tradition of playing soccer afterwards but that goes only so far due to our full stomachs. My cousins and I play a friendly game of poker, afterwards our failed attempts for soccer, for first dibs on dessert. After a good game of poker, my cousins and I look for ways to entertain ourselves meanwhile the adults talk about their lives and brag about their kids. Society today makes Thanksgiving look like a day just to eat. As society advances the meaning of Thanksgiving deteriorates into a secular holiday. The meaning of Thanksgiving seems obsolete. I truly believe that Thanksgiving should be refreshed in its meaning and should be celebrated with family and love. As people come together to share a special day in our history, this should be a day which people will not take for granted.

Word Count: 1473 Gupta, Charu. 2001. Sexuality, Obscenity, Community: Women, Muslims and the Hindu Public in Colonial India. Delhi: Permanent Black Charu Gupta’s work, ‘Sexuality, Obscenity, Community: Women, Muslims and the Hindu Public in Colonial India’, published in 2001, provides an enlightening view on themes including gender, sexuality and religion, all in the context of the British Colonialism and the rise of the Hindu nationalist ideology. In the second chapter, ‘Redefining obscenity in Aesthetics and Print’, Gupta focuses on the â€Å"moral panic† in Colonial India regarding representations of sexuality and ideas of obscenity in print. (p.30) She examines the attempts made by British Colonial and Hindu moralists to utilize printed literature in order to promote a civilised, celibate society, and scrutinizes the ways in which this was used to police and discredit particularly female, but also male sexual and social identities. Gupta then sets this against the apparent obscenity and semi-pornographic nature of popular literature, and argues that this provided a â€Å"serious chall enge† to the moralist mind-set by resisting and inverting the elite’s attempts to control the Hindu public. (p.30) This view provides an insightful understanding of the diversities and consistencies of print culture, and throughout the chapter, Gupta corroborates her points utilizing a broad range of literary and textual evidence, including books, poems, pamphlets, songs and advertisements, whichShow MoreRelatedModern Bollywood, A Decade Old: Bollywood and the Colonial Censorship3158 Words   |  13 Pagesgovernment.
